When to go
The Swiss alps are beautiful all year round. The winter
speaks for itself with guaranteed snow from December to April.
Spring is late, really starting in June when the lower lying snow has
melted and the alpine flowers begin to show.
The summer season is July and August with its hot Mediterranean climate.
The autumn, September and October, is one of the area's best kept secrets.
Often still warm even at high altitude, the softening light glows through the
changing colour of the autumn leaves. This area around Sion is the wine
growing region of Switzerland and, in the autumn, everywhere you go in the
valley there are baskets and truckloads of grapes and the intoxicating
smell of wine fills the air.
It is also the hunting season and Venison is a popular dish on most
restaurant menus in the autumn.
